We wanted to try deep sea fishing.
For first time anglers it was a good experience, our captain took us to several fishing spots around Racha Yai, some spots were not as good. Our captain made sure that if we didn’t have anything on our hooks after 15 mins we would go to the next spot. All in all, we caught more than enough fish we had them for lunch on our boat and had a few more that we took to a local market to get deep fried when we got back to Patong. There was an incident on the boat where one of the guys’ fishing rod broke from normal use. was don’t worry and just enjoy the trip. We were given a pass and was grateful for that. All in all, I would definitely recommend We are planning another trip back and we would not go with another fishing charter. We would probably splurge a little bit more and go for a Phuket Promax boat and hope that could take us to better fishing spots for bigger fish.
Given this, we probably had lower expectations but we had a really good time. Pickup was easy, the staff speak only a little English but it was fine, we caught heaps of fish both trolling (tuna) and bottom fishing (grouper). Lunch perhaps wouldn’t have been as good if we didn’t catch anything, but had a nice Tom Yum soup, tuna sashimi and fried tuna with the fish we caught. The boat was not the most modern and a bit slow (2 hours to get to Racha Yao/Noi, but probably started trolling after 1 hour), but felt safe. The only negative was we didn’t agree with the staff not throwing back the undersized small fish.
Great day spent fishing on one of the budget boats. The crew knew what to do and where to find fish. We had some slow patches, but that’s what happens when trolling. Highlight of the day was the lunch they cooked on the boat. They used the fish we had caught that day and made sashimi, fish soup and fried fish. Awesome meal.
